Historical Fake-outs

"In the Victorian-era, it was officially frowned upon for women to wear makeup, but the clever beauty mavens of the day found other ways to flush their cheeks, redden their lips, and give their eyes that era's fashionably limpid look. Victorian women were advised to pinch their cheeks, bite there lips and grate horseradish into cold milk and apply it to the skin  to improve its color. One bit of folklore said to rub cheeks with a crimsom silk cloth dipped in wine. (of course, if you rubbed hard enough, your cheeks would flush, regardless of the color of the cloth--or the wine)."
